Middletown, Conn. – Blair Ingraham (Northport, N.Y.)
scored the only goal of the game at 20:31 of the first half and
Tori Redding (Guilford, Conn.) earned a shutout in the cage with 13
saves to lead the Wesleyan University Cardinals to a 1-0 win over
the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action this
afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 17 in the nation, falls to 3-4
overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC, while the No. 20-ranked Cardinals
improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the league. Wesleyan
snapped a three-game losing streak to Trinity and avenged a 3-2
overtime loss in Hartford in 2009.
Trinity junior goalkeeper Gina Dinallo (West
Hartford, Conn.) came out of the cage on a penalty corner, allowing
Ingraham to tap the ball into an empty net for the game's only
scoring. Trinity nearly netted the equalizer in the final
minutes of the half, but strong Redding stopped a shot from Trinity
senior Robyn
Williams (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and was able to seal off the edge
of the cage and stop a follow-up shot from junior Payson Sword
(Princeton, N.J.).
Trinity kept the offensive pressure on throughout the second
half, outshooting Wesleyan by a 9-3 margin, but Redding made nine
of her 13 saves in the period. Trinity's final opportunity came
with 40 seconds remaining, when the Bantams were awarded a penalty
corner, but the Wesleyan defense snuffed out the opportunity.
Shots were even in the contest at 15-15, while Trinity held a 7-5
edge in penalty corners. Dinallo finished with nine saves in the
Trinity cage.
