Hartford, Conn. – Senior Emily Weedon
(Wellesley, Mass.) and junior Lily Pepper
(Princeton Junction, N.J.) combined on the team's
seventh shutout of the season with five saves between them to lead
the Trinity College Bantams to a scoreless tie against the visiting
Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in women's
soccer action this afternoon. Trinity is now 5-2-4, while the
Warriors, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 11 in the nation,
fail to win for the first time in 12 games and are now
13-0-2. Trinity's seven shutouts ties the
College's single-season record.
Neither team threatened in the first half,
totaling seven shots between them, but Trinity junior forward
Katie Giberson (Valhalla, N.Y.) nearly scored in
the opening minutes of the second stanza, sending a hard ball from
the top right corner of the box that Warrior junior goalie
Theresa Pagnozzi (Waterford, Conn.) needed to dive
up and to her left to stop. Eastern Connecticut freshman
forward Nicole Leonard (Rutherford, N.J.)
one-timed a shot from 15 yards out in front of the goal that was
just wide left 15 minutes into the second half, and sophomore
forward Chelsea Downer (Colchester, Conn.) smacked
a shot from the right wing on a breakaway that sailed just over the
upper-right corner of the Bantam goal in the 67th
minute.
Weedon made one save in the first half and
Pepper stopped three in the second half and one in the first
overtime, while Pagnozzi totaled eight saves to earn a shutout but
did not record a victory for the first time this season.
Pepper spoiled the closest chance in overtime by either team,
getting her hand on a loose ball in traffic front of her net before
any of several Warriors in the area could make a play on it.
Sophomore M/D Heather Lyhne (Wethersfield, Conn.)
paced Trinity offensively with four shots.
