Hartford, Conn. – Senior goaltender Scott Heffernan (Warwick, R.I.) stopped 34 of 35 shots to lead the visiting Hamilton College Continentals to a 3-1 win over the Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey season opener for both teams this evening at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Trinity loses its first game against Hamilton since the 2006-07 season.
Hamilton opened the scoring 8:28 into the game when freshman forward Michael DiMare (Medford, Mass.) stuffed in a rebound during a power play. Fellow Continental rookie Tom Williams (Pennant, Saskatchewan) gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with 3:11 remaining in the first period during a Bantam power play, stealing the puck at center ice and receiving a pass back from junior forward Anthony Scarpino (Meadville, Pa.) to score the gamewinner. After a scoreless second frame and a third-period insurance goal by Hamilton sophomore defenseman Joseph Houk (Richboro, Pa.), Trinity senior captain forward Adam Houli (Howell, N.J.) spoiled the shutout with 5:44 left on a wrap-around the back of the net that barely slipped by Heffernan on his glove side. The game featured 59 minutes worth of penalties yet the teams combined to go 1-for-19 on power plays. Trinity senior goalie Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) managed 33 saves, including 17 in the final period.
