Hartford, Conn. – Senior Joe Brock (Cumming,
Ga.) scored the go-ahead goal, and added an empty netter
in the waning seconds to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a
4-2 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action
at Williams Rink today. Trinity drops to 0-2 overall and 0-2
in the league to start the young season, while Amherst jumps to 2-0
overall and 2-0 in the league, after the opening weekend of
action.
Trinity was first to strike in today's game, when
sophomore Sebastion Kimmel (Chico, Calif.) scored
on a one-timer from senior Derek Sandberg (St. Lazare,
Quebeck) just two minutes into the game. Later in
the period, with less than five minutes remaining, Amherst senior
co-captain Trip Wray (Walpole, Mass.) ripped a
slap shot on Trinity's net, but senior goaltender
Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) made a glove
save to preserve the Bantam lead. Moments after the highlight
stop, Amherst first-year Andrew Kurlandski (Kirkwood,
Mo.) put a shot to the right side of the Trinity net, just
out of Vesprini's reach, to tie the game at 1-1, with less
than two minutes remaining in the period.
After a dry start to the second period, Brock gave the Lord
Jeffs their first lead of the game, scoring the eventual
game-winning goal with 7:11 on the clock. Less than one
minute later, Amherst added another goal, courtesy of Brian
Safstrom, to go up 3-1.
Midway through the final period, junior Sean McCarthy
(Duxbury, Mass.), scored to pull the Bantams within a
goal, giving Trinity a chance at a late comeback. With the
Amherst offense controlling the final two minutes, the Bantams were
unable to pull Vesprini out of net until just :37 seconds remained
on the clock, and after a strong defensive play on a late effort by
Trinity, Brock would score a long distance empty-net goal - his
second of the game, and the fourth for Amherst - with five seconds
remaining on the clock.
Vesprini finished the game with 15 saves for the Bantams, while
Amherst senior goaltender Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake,
Alberta), coming off a shutout over Wesleyan in his first
start this season, collected 16 saves in today's
game.
