Hartford, Conn. – Senior captain defender Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal 12:05 into the third period and first-year goaltender Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.) made 36 saves to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Norwich University Cadets in women's ice hockey action this evening at Williams Rink. Trinity, ranked No. 8 in the nation, improves to 4-1-1, while the No. 5-ranked Cadets fall to 7-3 with their second defeat in a row.
Trinity scored twice in the third period to overcome a 1-0 deficit, beginning with a goal by junior forward Celia Colman-McGaw (Manchester, Conn.) 43 seconds into the final frame. Colman-McGaw took the pass ahead from senior captain forward Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.) and beat Norwich freshman netminder Joanie Plamondon (Pont-Rouge, Quebec) one-on-one low to her glove side. Twenty-two seconds into one of three Bantam power plays in the third period, Weiss sent the puck into traffic in front of the net and Guglielmi redirected it past Plamondon for the clincher. Norwich put increased pressure on the Bantam defense in the next couple of minutes after Guglielmi's goal, but Pujol held them at bay making a key kick save on a wrist shot from the left wing by Cadet senior captain forward Sophie Leclerc (Barre, Vt.) at the two-minute mark. Trinity took possession back and held it for much of the final two minutes, preventing Norwich from pulling its goalie until half minute remained in regulation.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Bantams hold a 13-6 edge in shots, Norwich controlled the second stanza with a 17-2 shot advantage, including an unassisted tally 2:08 into the period on a pwower play by Leclerc who lifted the puck over Pujol's left shoulder from close range. Trinity nearly tied the game with 4:33 left in the second period, as Plamondon stopped a rush by Weiss and Bantam rookie forward Emily Kleidon (Oakdale, Minn.) hit the right post with her rebound shot. Norwich had a first-period shot rattle off the cross bar, and Plamendon barely saved a shot by Colman-McGaw on a one-on-one chance midway through the first period. Weiss finished with two saves, while blueliners Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.) and Britney Ryan (Highland Ranch, Colo.) each had helpers for the Bantams. Plamondon totaled 22 saves for the Cadets.
