Boston, Mass. – Senior goaltender Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) made 47 saves to earn the shutout in net and lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams past the University of Massachusetts-Boston Beacon men's ice hockey team, 2-0, this evening in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)/Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action at the Clark Athletic Center. The Bantams improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC with their second win in a row, while the Beacons fall to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the ECAC East with their first loss in five games.
At 12:49 of the first period, sophomore forward Sabastion Kimmel (Chico, Calif.) gave Trinity the 1-0 lead when he clubbed in the rebound after sophomore forward Zachary Lombardi (Locust Valley, N.Y.) was denied on a breakaway opportunity that was started by sophomore forward Jordan So (Toronto, Ontario). The Bantams escaped the first period with a one-goal advantage despite being outshot, 20-4, and having to kill off four penalties including a five minute major with just over four minutes to play in the frame.
The second period was more balanced with the Beacons holding a slight, 14-10, shot advantage. Mass.-Boston senior forward Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mich.) had an to tie the contest late in the second period when he collected the puck alone on the hash marks and ripped a shot off the far post at the 16:10 mark. Trinity had several scoring chances late in the period as well on a pair of power plays, but could not capitalize.
In the third period, So sealed the game for the Bantams with a power-play goal with 4:07 to play, burying a loose puck in front of the net after senior defenseman Regnars Alksnis (Talsi, Latvia) and junior defenseman Jeffrey Menard (Burlington, Mass.) had crashed the net and fired off a pair of shots. The teams had gone a combined 0-11 on the man-advantage until So's late tally.
