Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Can't Recover from Early Deficit in Loss to Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College built an early 3-0 lead and sophomore goalie Zeke Testa (Wellesley, Mass.) made 36 saves in net as the host Beavers defeated the visiting Trinity College Bantams, 5-1, in an ECAC East/NESCAC men's ice hockey matchup at the Babson Skating Center on Saturday afternoon. With their second straight win, the Beavers improve to 4-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the ECAC East, while the Bantams fall to 2-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the NESCAC.

Babson scored three unanswered goals in the opening period to build a quick 3-0 lead. First-year Matt O'Neill (Norwell, Mass.) scored the first, as he took a pass from sophomore PT Donato (Arlington, Mass.) in the slot and fired it in the net for his first collegiate goal at 5:11. Later in the period, sophomore Jay Haseley (Rochester, N.Y.) settled junior Dan Ahern's (Melrose, Mass.) pass from the right point and wristed it through a crowd in front for his third goal of the campaign on a powerplay at 13:42. The Beavers then made it 3-0 with another powerplay strike at 16:51, when first-year Matt Furey (Quincy, Mass.) scored off a screened wrist shot from the top of the right circle for his first collegiate goal at 16:51.

Trinity got one goal back on its first shot of the second period, as senior Adam Houli (Howell, N.J.) redirected a pass from sophomore Jeffrey Menard (Burlington, Mass.) through Testa's legs for his second of the season at 1:38. However, that would be all Testa would allow in the contest, as he stopped the final 23 shots that he faced to finish with 36 saves in the game.

Babson tacked on an insurance goal midway through the third.  First-year Troy Starrett (Bellingham, Mass.) carried the puck down the left side and backhanded a pass through the slot. Haseley then tipped it to junior Cody Carlson (Peterborough, N.H.), who potted his third goal of the season inside the left post at 12:21. The Beavers then completed the 5-1 victory with their third powerplay score of the day, as first-year Ben Kravitz (Huntington, N.Y.) netted his first collegiate goal on a snap-shot from the right circle at 15:50.

Trinity goalie Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, Mass.) finished the game with 32 saves.
