Hartford, Conn. - Sophomores Celia Colman-McGaw
(Manchester, Conn.) and Hannah Harvey
(Silverthorne, Colo.) scored goals and senior tri-captain
Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.) made 33 saves
between the pipes to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1
victory over the visiting Connecticut College Camels in the
quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) Women's Ice Hockey Championship Tournament this afternoon
at Williams Rink. Trinity, ranked No. 5 in the nation,
reaches 20 wins for the first time in the program's history at
20-3-2 and advances to the NESCAC Semifinals against the No.
10-ranked Middlebury College Panthers on Saturday, March 6 at 4
p.m. at Amherst College. Connecticut College closes the year
with an 8-15-2 record. Trinity had lost, 2-1, to the Camels
at home in the NESCAC Quarters last season, but managed a third
victory this season against them this afternoon.
Middlebury won, 8-1, against Hamilton in its quarterfinal game
this afternoon, while top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Amherst, which
won, 10-1, against Colby in its quarterfinal game today, will host
Bowdoin College, which won at Williams today, 4-2, in the other
NESCAC Semifinal game, next Saturday at 1 p.m. Trinity,
playing in its fifth NESCAC Tournament and its fourth in a row,
will be making its second appearance in the NESCAC Semifinals in
next weekend. The Bantams won the first post-season game in
its history, 5-1, against Hamilton two seasons ago in the NESCAC
Quarters, but lost, 2-1, against Amherst at Middlebury in the
NESCAC Semifinals.
Trinity controlled the puck early and scored the game's first
goal 12:13 into the contest when Harvey one-timed a pass from right
to left in front of the goal by senior forward Britney
McKenna (Rye, N.H.) that beat the diving Connecticut
College senior goalie Sara Christopher (Andover,
Mass.) on a two-on-one opportunity. The Bantams
added to their lead 15 minutes into the second frame on a beautiful
individual move on by Colman-McGaw on a one-on-one breakaway. Both
Trinity goals came on power-play opportunities, as Connecticut
College was whistled for seven penalties in the game and five in
the second period.
The Camels were the aggressors in the third period, peppering
Iwachiw with several early shots during a power play that carried
over from the final minute of the second period, and converted the
opportunity with 18:56 on the clock when junior defender
Kourtney Brim (Shawnee, Kansas) smacked in a
rebound after an initial shot by junior forward Celia
Medeiros (Portsmouith, R.I.) was blocked.
Connecticut College continued its pressure throughout the final
stanza in its attempt to tie the score, although Trinity remained
disciplined and did not commit a penalty over the last 20
minutes. Junior captain Brigid O'Gorman (Eden,
N.Y.) sent a wrist shot from 20 yards away into traffic in
front of the goal, with Christopher pulled in favor of an extra
offensive Camel player, with seven seconds left, but Iwachiw
stopped the shot for her final save to preserve the victory.
Trinity juniors Sarah Kohn (Winchester, Mass.) and
Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) recorded
assists for the Bantams, while Christopher finished with 26 stops.
