Keene, N.H.– Senior goalie Meghan Ledoux
(Standish, Maine) made a career-high 15 saves to lead
the Keene State College Owls to a 2-1 upset win against the
visiting Trinity College Bantams in field hokey action this evening
at Owl Athletic Complex. Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the
nation, drops to 2-2 with its second defeat in a row, while the
Owls improve to 7-1 with their third win in a row and their fiorst
triumph over Trinity since 2006.
The Bantams tried to hit the scoreboard first, just over three
minutes into the game, as senior co-captain forward Christy
Bradley (Wellesley, Mass.) ripped one of her 16 shots
of the game on a breakaway, only to be set aside by Ledoux.
Just under the five minute mark, the Owls answered, as freshman
back Katlyn Simula (Bridgewater, N.H.) rocketed
the ball into the circle to a wide open Elizabeth Coffin
(Sugar Hill, N.H.), who played the ball off a bounce, to
beat Bantam goalie Gina Dinallo (West
Hartford, Conn.) and give Keene State a 1-0
lead. Trinity controlled for most of the first-half,
outshooting the Owls, 12-3, in the period and dominating possession
of the ball, but Keene State extended its lead to 2-0 as
junior Aislynn Sherry (Rehobeth, Mass.) took the
ball from midfield into the circle and crossed it in front of the
net to find a streaking Niki Smith (Southwick,
Mass.) at the 20:53 mark for her third goal of the
season.
In the second-half, the Bantams scored at the 47:30 mark, when
freshman Paige Duke (Dedham,
Mass.) took a pass from Bradley on a designed play off a
corner, to cut the Owls lead to 2-1. Trinity continued to
pressure Keene State in their own zone, outshooting the Owls,
12-2, and earning 10 penalty corners none for the Owls. With under
27 minutes remaining in the game, Bradley again was found open off
a corner, and rifled a shot toward an outstretched Ledoux, but
the Owls defense cleared the ball out of the zone, to keep Keene
State ahead, 2-1. Keene State best scoring chance
in the second-half came with 18 minutes remaining in the
game, as Sherry again led the Owls on the fast break, and found
Coffin open on the far post, but her shot sailed just wide and out
of play.
In the game's final two minutes, Trinity tried desperately to
find the equalizer, as they had six shots and three corners.
Bradley had a shot blocked, and junior Payson Sword
(Princeton, N.J.) had a shot turned away by Ledoux.
The Owls then cleared the zone as the clock ran out for the 2-1
victory. Dinallo made two saves in the Trinity cage, while
Trinity outshot the Owls, 24-5, in the game and had a 20-to-1
corners advantage.
