KOMAREK BLAST IN OVERTIME GIVES TRINITY WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY
WIN AT HOLY CROSS
Hartford, Conn. – Senior captain defender Laura Komarek
(Plymouth, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal on a power-play slap
shot 41 seconds into overtime to lead the visiting Trinity College
Bantams to a 3-2 victory over the College of the Holy Cross
Crusaders in women's ice hockey action this evening at the
Hart Center. Trinity ranked No. 8 in the nation, improves to
9-1-2 and extends its unbeaten streak to eight games with its
second win in a row over the Crusaders. Holy Cross drops to
9-4 with its second consecutive defeat.
Holy Cross committed a costly penalty attempting to slow down a
Trinity breakaway with 14 seconds left in the third period, setting
Komarek up for her clinching rocket from eight feet inside the blue
line on the left wing. Bantam sophomore blueliner Britney
Ryan (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) assisted on the game-winner.
The Crusaders had tied the game with 5:42 left in the third period
on a wrap around the right post by junior captain forward New
Boston, Mich.). Trinity nearly went back ahead in regulation
on another power play, but Holy Cross junior goalie Carly
Dominick-Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.) dove to stop a shot in traffic by
Trinity rookie forward Emily Kleidon (Oakdale, Minn.).
After killing off an early penalty, Trinity had the first close
chance at a goal just over seven minutes into the game when a high
wrister on a one-on-one breakaway from senior captain defender
Alexa Gugleilmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) was stopped on by
Dominick-Sobol. Trinity freshman backstop Alexa Pujol (New
Canaan, Conn.) returned the favor at the 7:50 mark of the first
period, snaring a hard shot at from close by Holy Cross sophomore
forward Rebecca O'Quinn (Arlington, Mass.).
Bantam junior forward Payson Sword (Princeton, N.J.) scored the
game-s first goal on a power play 4:04 into the second stanza, and
senior captain forward Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.) tallied just 46
seconds later to give Trinity a 2-0 lead. O'Quinn beat
Pujol one-on-one after stealing the puck at her own blue line to
cut the Trinity lead to 2-1 midway through the second frame.
Both goalies made impressive saves to keep the scoring to a
minimum, as Dominick-Sobol recorded 13 of her 24 stops in the
second period and Pujol had 10 of 23 saves in the third period.
