Trinity Women's Soccer Defeated At Tufts

Box Score

Somerville, Mass. - Sophomore Maeve Stewart (Palo Alto, Calif.) registered a goal and an assist as the Tufts University Jumbos won, 2-0, over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon at Kraft Field.  Trinity falls to 4-2-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the NESCAC, while the Jumbos improve to 4-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NESCAC.

In the seventh minute, the Jumbos earned back-to-back corner kicks. On the second attempt, junior Alyssa Von Puttkammer (Park City, Utah) placed the ball perfectly to the far post where Stewart headed it in for her second tally of the season.  Tufts received another corner-kick opportunity in the 21st minute, but this time Trinity senior keeper Lily Pepper (Princeton Junction, N.J.) stepped up and caught the ball to end the threat.  Trinity had a pair of chances as the first half wound down, the first of which coming on a corner kick in the 31st minute. The Bantams were unable to get off a shot on that attempt though. In the 35th minute, they received a shot on goal from senior Jenny Ley (Warwick, R.I.) in the box, but Tufts sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Wright (Austin, Texas) was there for the stop.  Wright made four saves in the first half while Pepper made two. Tufts outshot the Bantams in the first half, 5-4.

Early in the second half, the Bantams  received a corner kick at the 55th minute. The ball was initially punched out by the keeper and cleared by senior Jamie Love-Nichols (Cortez, Colo.). Trinity continued the pressure, but a crossing pass was knocked out by junior keeper Phoebe Hanley (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), who entered the match for the second half.  Love-Nichols had a chance to make it 2-0 Tufts in the 63rd minute as she made a run on the left side, but her shot was saved by a diving Pepper.  The Jumbos did get their second goal in the 80th minute on another header, this time by sophomore Anya Kaufmann (Evergreen, Colo.), with Stewart earning the assist. Just a few minutes later Love-Nichols had a header just miss, going over the crossbar.  Tufts ended the match with a 12-6 shot advantage, with each keeper making a single stop in the second half.
