Clinton, N.Y. - Freshman Samuel Calahan (Edina, Minn.) stopped all 28 shots he faced to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 win over the Hamilton College Continentals in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey game at Russell Sage Rink this evening. Trinity improves to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC, while Hamilton drops to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the league.
It was the first career shutout for Calahan. Senior captain defenseman Michael DeMayo (Seaford, N.Y.) and junior forward Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.) each tallied one goal for the Bantams. Junior forward Zachary Lombardi (Locust Valley, N.Y.), senior forward Jordan So (Toronto, Ontario) and junior Adamo Miceli (Woodbridge, Ontario) chipped in one assist apiece. Joe Quattrocchi made 31 saves in 58 minutes, 27 seconds in goal for the Continentals. Hamilton called a time-out with 1:53 remaining, and Quattrocchi stayed on the bench. The Continentals were called for illegally playing the puck with a high stick with 19.7 seconds left, and Quattrocchi came on for the remainder of the game.
Hamilton had a good chance to take an early lead when Mike DiMare received a centering pass from the left side and redirected the puck towards the net from right in front. But Calahan made a sliding save to keep the game scoreless. Trinity got on the board 7:50 into the first period. Lombardi played the puck ahead to DeMayo on a rush, DeMayo carried across the blue line and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net. So was also credited with an assist on the play. Trinity led 1-0 at the first intermission.
Despite a trio of penalties against the Bantams early in the second period, the Continentals were unable to capitalize. Trinity had a good opportunity to double their lead just over five minutes into the second on a breakaway opportunity down the left side. But a save from Quattrocchi held the Bantams' lead to one. Trinity led 1-0 at the second intermission.
Menard put the Bantams ahead 2-0 at 3:56 of the third when he received a pass from Miceli on a rush up the right side, and fired a wrist shot from inside the right circle that snuck inside the near post. It was Menard's fourth goal of the year. Hamilton had several chances to score late in the third period, including a shot by DiMare that sailed just over the crossbar with 40 seconds remaining. Trinity held a 33-28 shot advantage. The Bantams were 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Continentals were 0-for-6. Trinity leads the all-time series 13-12-1.
