Hartford, Conn. – The seniors played the final regular season home game of their careers and made it a memorable one, leading the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-0 win over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's ice hockey action this afternoon on Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center. Trinity, ranked No. 9 in the nation, improves to 14-3-4 overall and 7-3-3 in the NESCAC with its third straight win, while the Polar Bears fall to 13-7-2 overall and 8-5-1 in the league. Trinity and Bowdoin switch places as the third and fourth ranked teams in the NESCAC standings after today's game.
Trinity came out aggressive, outshooting Bowdoin 12-6 in the first period, but Bowdoin sophomore goaltender Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.) and Trinity first-year goaltender Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.) proved difficult to solve as they prevented the scoreboard from lighting up by the period's end. It didn't take long for Trinity to break the ice in the second, as senior Sarah Kohn (Winchester, Mass.) netted her second goal of the season and the eventual the game-winner, just 11 seconds into the period. Bowdoin wouldn't let up easily, outshooting the Bantams 11-4 the remainder of the period, but Pujol protected the Trinity lead, stopping all shots that came her way.
After a slow start to the third period, senior Kim Weiss (Potomac, Md.), less than 24 hours after becoming the first player in program history to score 100 points in her career, skated ahead of the pack and found herself in a one-on-one showdown with Connolly. Weiss deeked the goalie and backhanded a shot into the net for her 102nd career point, giving the Bantams some breathing space with a two-goal margin.
Bowdoin pulled their goalie with just under two minutes remaining in the game, hoping to net two quick goals with an extra skater on the offensive end, but Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) became the third Trinity senior to score on the afternoon, flipping up a shot from mid-rink and into the empty net, securing the win for the Bantams.
Pujol finished the game with 20 saves, running her shutout streak to 202 minutes with her second straight shutout. Connolly finished the game with 24 stops for the Polar Bears.
