Hartford, Conn. – Senior guard Ian Fels (Miami,
Fla.) scored all of his game-high 17 points in the second
half, sinking all three of his three-point tries and all six of his
foul shots, and added three assists to lead the Trinity College
Bantams to a 76-55 win over the visiting Bates College Bobcats in
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's
basketball action this evening at Oosting Gym. Trinity
improves to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the NESCAC with its second
consecutive victory, while Bates drops to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in
the league with its first loss in four games.
Bates started the game with a 5-0 run and
took its biggest lead of the game at 28-14 with just under six
minutes left in the first half on a layup by senior tri-captain
forward Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.), but
Trinity scored 13 of the final 20 points before intermission.
Bates shot 53.8 percent from the field in the first half to lead,
35-27, at the break, before Trinity battled to take its first lead
of the game with 6:22 remaining on back-to-back three pointers by
Fels and classmate Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.).
Trinity maintained its lead until the final form, shooting 54.5
percent from the field and scoring 49 points in the final 20
minutes. Bates was 5-for-8 from long range in the first half,
but 2-for-13 in the second half, while Trinity made 10-for-17 from
three-point range in the game. The Bobcats were also
victimized by a 10 missed free throws in 19 attempts, while Trinity
made 24-for-28 from the charity stripe.
Ford finished with 16 points, went 3-for-4
from long range, and grabbed three rebounds, while senior
co-captain forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville,
N.Y.) added 15 points and seven boards, and senior
Jared Pimm (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored 10 points
for the Bantams. Sophomore forward Adam Skaggs
(Framingham, Mass.) paced Trinity on the boards with
nine. Ellis led Bates with 15 points and five rebounds, while
three different Bobcats added 11 points. Junior forward
John Squires (Swampscott, Mass.) pulled down a
team-high eight boards, distributed three assists, and blocked four
shots for Bates.
