Hartford, Conn. – Senior co-captain attacker
Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) scored four
goals and added an assist and two draw controls to lead the Trinity
College Bantams to a 12-10 win over the visiting New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Wesleyan University
Cardinals in women's lacrosse action this afternoon in a
steady but light rain on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No.
4 in the nation, wins its fifth in a row over the Cardinals to
improve to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the NESCAC, while the Wesleyan
falls to 5-5 overall and 0-5 in the league.
With the game tied, 1-1, after nearly four minutes of play, the
Bantams went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-1 lead with 6:13 left in the
first half. Romanowsky scored twice and assisted on a third
goal during the run, including a quick catch and shot in traffic on
a pass by junior midfielder Liz Bruno (Andover,
Mass.) to cap off the spurt. Wesleyan scored twice
in the final minute before the break including a fastbreak tally by
Hillary Cook (Carlisle, Mass.) that just beat the
horn with 0.7 seconds on the clock to account for an 8-3 score at
intermission.
The teams traded goals over the first half of the second stanza,
before Wesleyan scored four times in the final 10 minutes to pull
within a pair of goals at 12-10 with 1:09 remaining in
regulation. Four different Cardinals scored unassisted goals
during the run including the final tally by Kaylin Berger
(Farmington, Conn.), giving her four goals, all in the
second half. Berger controlled the draw after her last goal
cut the Trinity lead to 12-10, and rushed the ball upfield to
rookie teammate Blair Ingraham (Northport, N.Y.)
who shot quick but was stopped by Bantam sophomore goalie
Olivia Whitney (Danvers, Mass.) who had re-entered
the game with 5:20 on the clock after playing the first half.
Wesleyan got the ball back in the final minute, but Whitney made
another save, and Trinity sophomore midfielder Megan
Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) caused a Cardinal turnover just to
the left of the Bantam goal to end the threat.
Trinity sophomore attacker Hadley Duncan (Rye,
N.Y.) recorded three goals, while Bruno finished with two
goals, one assist, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers,
and senior co-captain midfielder Alisen Urquhart (Redding
Conn.) scored twice. Whitney and junior goalie
Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) made three
saves apiece, and Leonhard registered a game-high six ground balls
and three caused turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Maggie
Drowica (Glen Head, N.Y.) notched 16 saves and added four
ground balls in a stellar effort, while Cook, Jess Chukwu
(Evanston, Ill.), and Lydia Kring (Philadelphia,
Pa.) scored twice apiece for Wesleyan.
