Box Score Hartford, Conn.— Sophomore Kate Sisk (Deerfield, Mass.) scored her first career goal, the eventual game-winner for the Amherst College Lord Jeffs, who beat the Trinity College Bantams 2-0 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon at Campus Field. Trinity is handed their first loss of the season, falling to 3-1-2 on the year and 1-1-2 in the NESCAC, while Amherst stays unbeaten with an overall record of 6-0 and a 4-0 league mark.
Amherst came out firing in the first half, but a save by senior Lily Pepper (Princeton Jct., N.J.) and a strong defensive play by senior Courtney DeVinney (Wallingford, Penn.) kept the game scoreless in the early goings. Midway through the first half, senior Katie Giberson (Valhalla, N.Y.) took a shot that bounced off of the crossbar, the second time in as many games the goal frame has taken a score away from Giberson. Trinity had two additional scoring opportunities in the half, both of which resulted in high shots.
Amherst took control of the match in the second half, outshooting the Bantams 7-2 in the final frame. The Lord Jeffs were finally able to get one of their 14 shots past Pepper, when Sisk would score her first goal in 22 career games to give Amherst a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the half. Sophomore Chloe MacKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md.) put the game out of reach for the Bantams with a goal in the 80th minute. Giberson got two more strong shots in the final five minutes, but a sliding stop by Amherst senior goalkeeper Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) led to another shot over the net to keep Trinity off the scoreboard.
The save was the only of the game for Horwitz, who is credited with a shutout, her fourth of the season. Pepper ended the game with three stops in net for the Bantams.
