Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The visiting Wesleyan University
Cardinals took advantage of their opportunities to take a 2-0
victory against the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action
this afternoon. Trinity drops to 4-8-1 overall with its
second loss in a row and extends its winless streak to five games,
while the Cardinals improve to 6-7-1 overall with their first win
in three games. The Bantams close the 2012 NESCAC schedule
with a 3-7 mark, and will qualify for the league tournament for the
eighth time and the fifth time in the last six years if Colby loses
its home game tomorrow against Bates. Wesleyan, also 3-7 in
the league, will qualify for the post-season with a Colby win or
tie against Bates.
Wesleyan senior forward Laura Kurash (Voorhees,
N.J.) assisted freshman forward Isabel Clements
(Lyme, Conn.) in the 62nd minute to break a scoreless tie,
and added an insurance goal when she converted on a high cross from
the right by senior Mikaela Curtin (Wellesley,
Mass.) in the 76th minute. Trinity peppered
Wesleyan's second-half keeper Rachel Hobert (Chicago,
Ill.) with 12 shots after the break, but failed to
score.
The game had been played fairly evenly through a scoreless first
half with Trinity holding a 7-5 shot advantage. Bantam
first-year forward Abbey Lake (Westport, Conn.)
took a hard blast from the upper right corner of the box just under
three minutes into the game, but Wesleyan sophomore goalie
Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass.) made a diving
stop. Fellow Bantam rookie Kelsey Thomas (Stonington,
Conn.) nearly scored on a rocket that caromed off the
cross bar later in the opening period. Trinity first-year GK
Monica DiFiori (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) totaled
three saves, while Tollman made four saves and Hobert added six for
the Cardinals.
