Lewiston, Maine - The visiting Trinity College Bantams received a big performance by junior co-captain OH Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.) en route to a 3-0 win over the Bates College Bobcats in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball match this evening at Alumni Gym. The Bantams, who improve to 11-10 overall and 4-5 in the NESCAC, won by set scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-22, and clinched a spot in the eight-team field of the NESCAC Volleyball Championship which begins next weekend. Bates drops to 10-15 overall and 1-8 in the league, dropping out of the race for a spot in the NESCAC tournament.
Brickley riddled the Bobcats with 17 kills and only two attack errors on 30 attempts, struck from all over the floor, to finish with a sparkling .500 attack percentage. She also had a match-high 16 digs. Springy senior co-captain OH Danielle Isaman (West Hartford, Conn.) added 11 kills against three errors (.348) with 10 digs and two blocks. First-year MH Kate Giddens (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) contributed seven kills and four aces, while junior S Amy Hackett (Wallingford, Conn.) and first-year S Gina Buzzelli (Cheshire, Conn.) shared the team lead with 16 assists apiece.
Both teams played well in the first set, but Trinity was a bit better, attacking at a .429 clip compared to Bates' .267, the Bobcats' best rate of the match. Brickley had six kills and Isaman had four more in the frame, with neither player committing an error. The Bantams kept firing away with success in the second set, posting an impressive .333 attack percentage behind five more error-free kills by Brickley. The Bobcats kept fighting and clawed their way back from a 13-8 deficit in the third set to close it to 22-20, prompting a Trinity timeout. The teams traded two points apiece before Isaman closed out the match with a kill from the back row.
Pyne led the Bobcats with eight kills and just two attack errors, for a .250 percentage, along with three blocks, and Abramson had two kills, three blocks and a team-high eight digs. Mary Deneen added five kills with no attack errors and two blocks, and Brynn Wendel had six kills and two blocks. Setter Miranda Shapiro totaled a match-high 23 assists.
