Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Trinity senior forward Hadley
Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) scored two goals including the
game-tying score with zero seconds on the clock in regulation, but
Amherst junior Krista Zsitvay (New Vernon, N.J.)
scored two herself, including the game-winner in the second
overtime to give the Lord Jeffs a 3-2 win over the Bantams in the
Quarterfinal Round of the New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) Field Hockey Championship Tournament on Robin
Sheppard Field this afternoon. Trinity and Amherst are both
11-4 overall after today's match, and Amherst advances to the
semifinal round next week. Trinity hopes to receive a bid to
the NCAA Tournament, which will be determined at the conclusion of
tournament play. Trinity beat Amherst earlier in the season,
in a 1-0 overtime game.
Amherst jumped on top of the Bantams 2-0 in the first half,
behind goals from first-year Annika Nygren (Sudbury,
Mass.) and Zsitvay. After the intermission, Trinity
came back strong, striking with a quick goal by Duncan, closing the
gap to 2-1. The Bantams continued to attack, pouring on 15
shots to Amherst's five in the period. Trinity outshot
Amherst 26-16 in the game.
With 14 seconds left in regulation, Trinity senior co-captain
midfielder Haley Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.) took a
hard shot and sophomore Rachel Tannenbaum (Berwyn,
Pa.) made what appeared to be a game-saving sliding kick
save, before Trinity was awarded a penalty corner with no time on
the clock. On the ensuing play, Trinity managed three shots,
including another by Thompson, and two rebound shots by Duncan, the
last of which resulted in a goal to force overtime.
Tannenbaum made another impressive stop in the first overtime to
protect the tie, and strong defensive plays by both teams in the
second overtime period – one by Amherst junior Sarah
Canning (Cos Cob, Conn.) and another by Trinity sophomore
Courtney Wynne (Darien, Conn.) - kept the game
alive. With just over eight minutes remaining in the second
overtime, Zsitvay notched her second goal of the contest on a
penalty corner, sending Amherst to an on-field celebration and to
the second round of the Championship Tournament.
Tannenbaum finished the game with 16 saves for Amherst, while
Trinity junior goalie Anne Marie Scalambrino (Chicago,
Ill.) made six saves in net for Trinity. Amherst
takes on the undefeated No. 1-seed Middlebury in the Semifinal
round next Sat., Nov. 3 at 11 a.m.
