Box Score Malden, Mass. - The Tufts University Jumbos scored three goals
within a three-minute span in the second period to overcome a
two-goal deficit, but the visiting Trinity College Bantams netted
the equalizer with 2:37 remaining in the third period as the teams
finished in a 4-4 New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) men's ice hockey tie this evening at Valley
Forum.
The Jumbos got the 2012-13 season off to a great start by scoring a
short-handed goal 2:27 into the game. Freshman Conor Helfrich
converted a pass from behind the net by junior Cody Armstrong and
Tufts led 1-0. The Bantams evened the score at 8:50 of the
opening period when freshman Jim Burt (Hamden, Conn.) banged in a
rebound. The game went to the first intermission tied at 1-1 as
Jumbo goalie Brian Phillips and Bantam netminder Ben Coulthard
(South Windsor, Conn.) each had 10 saves.
Though Tufts would finish the second period strong, it was Trinity
who started it well. They scored twice within 47 seconds early to
gain a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.)
tallied at 1:05 followed by sophomore Tim Shea's (Somerset, Mass.)
goal at 1:52, forcing a Jumbo time-out. Tufts scored twice on
the power-play during its three-goal run later in the period.
Freshman Stewart Bell scored when the Jumbos were up a man at 11:28
of the second. Less than a minute later, senior defenseman Jared
Barker had an unassisted goal at 12:24 to tie the score at 3-3.
Sophomore Tyler Voigt gave the Jumbos a 4-3 margin with another
power-play goal at 14:02. The trio of scores within 2:34 turned the
game around.
The Jumbos held on to the lead for the majority of the third period
until Trinity's Jordan So (Toronto, Ontario) was fed wide open in
front of the net and directed the puck in to tie the score 4-4. The
Jumbos would put five shots on net in the overtime period, but the
game ended in a tie. Phillips, making his first career start,
finished with 34 saves, as did Trinity's Coulthart. Shots were an
even 38-38. Burt and Shea both had a goal and an assist for
Trinity, while junior Will Gray (Wellesley, Mass.) earned two
assists. The Jumbos got points from nine different players.
