Amherst, Mass. - Geneva Lloyd (Calgary, Alberta) and Barrett
McBride (Glenview, Ill.) each netted a first period goal as the
Amherst College Lord Jeff women's hockey team earned a 2-1
win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's ice hockey action at
Orr Rink this afternoon. Trinity, which ended a 14-game
winless streak against Amherst with a 3-2 road win yesterday, fall
to 12-10 overall and 7-7 in the NESCAC. Amherst, ranked No. 3
nationally, improves to 18-4 overall and 12-2 in the
league.
Hoping to get off to a fast start, Amherst recorded the
game's first good scoring opportunity less than two minutes
after the opening whistle when first-year Madeline Tank (Winnetka,
Ill.) collected a rebound in front, before finding the pads of
sophomore goaltender Alexa Pujol. Moments later, Stephanie
Clegg (Woburn, Mass.) linked up with classmate Ellen Swiontkowski
(Minnetonka, Minn.), but Pujol again proved up to the challenge,
making another big stop to keep it scoreless. On the power
play with 10:11 to go in the opening period, the Jeffs finally
broke through when Lloyd blasted a shot from the point through a
screen. Looking to pad their lead with just over five minutes
remaining in the first, McBride found open space in the middle
of the ice and eluded a Bantam defender between the circles before
lifting an off-balance shot over Pujols' shoulder to stake
Amherst to a 2-0 cushion.
Still down two with 6:15 remaining in regulation, Trinity
capitalized on a Lord Jeff miscue, intercepting a failed clearance
near center ice. Coming in alone on goal, first-year Samantha
Edelson (Northbrook, Ill.) beat Sinead Murphy (Rochester,
Minn.) with a backhand to the near post, but the Amherst defense
held steady the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
Murphy finished with 13 saves, while Pujol made 29 stops.
