Box Score Brunswick, Maine - Ollie Koo scored a pair of goals to lead the
Bowdoin College Polar Bear men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 win over
the visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon at Sidney J.
Watson Arena. The No. 4-ranked Polar Bears rebound from their
first loss of the season last night to improve to 13-1-1
overall and 8-1-1 in the NESCAC. The Bantams fall to 6-4-3 overall
and 3-2-3 in the league.
The Bantams netted the first goal of the game at 8:28 into play.
Senior forward Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.) skated in on
the Polar Bears' net, beating a defender, and sent a hard shot past
Bowdoin goalie Max Fenkell to the right post. Trinity carried the
1-0 through the period, despite several scoring opportunities for
both sides.
Bowdoin capitalized on an opening minute power-play to even the
score at 1-1 in the second period. Tim Coffey sent the puck across
the goal face from the left post at 1:07 into the stanza, to tie
the game. The Polar Bears scored again on the power play at 6:42.
Colin Downey sent the puck behind the net towards Harry Matheson,
who passed the puck back out and around to John McGinnis for the
one-timer from the right dot to lead 2-1. Trinity nearly tied the
game with a hard shot off the pipe by sophomore forward Conor
Coveney (Hingham, Mass.) about eight minutes into the period.
Bowdoin answered the close call with a goal at 10:02 to go ahead
3-1. Jay Livermore sent a long pass across the ice, which Koo
picked up behind the Trinity defense. Koo challenged Bantam junior
goalie Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.), and sent the puck
through the five-hole.
Trinity took less than two minutes before cutting the Bowdoin
lead to 3-2 in the opening of the third period. First-year forward
Ben Hjalmarsson (Stockholm, Sweden) sent the puck off-speed
through the crowd and senior forward Jordan So (Toronto,
Ontario) poked it in from the left post. The one goal game lasted
under two minutes, with another Koo goal. Receiving a pass from
Downey, Koo skated down the chute and landed the puck just
beyond recently-inserted Trinity rookie backstop Nathaniel
Heibron's (West Vancouver, British Columbia) outstretched leg at
3:39. With a minute left to play Trinity pulled their goalie in a
final push to catch Bowdoin. Connor Quinn skated down the right
side, matched by a Bantam defender, to net the final goal of the
game and secure Bowdoin a 5-2 win. Coulthard made 22 saves in
net for the Bantams, before being relieved by Heibron who
contributed nine stops. Fenkell had 23 saves in the game to earn
the Polar Bear win.
