Trinity Women's Soccer Suffers Third League Loss In A Row Against Wesleyan

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. –  The visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals collected their first league win of the season, 2-0, over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity, ranked No. 7 in New England, falls to 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the NESCAC with its third-consecutive conference setback.  Wesleyan improves to 2-6-4 overall and 1-4-3 in the league with its third win in a row over the Bantams.

In a scoreless first half, Trinity was the aggressor, coming up with three close chances before the break.  Sophomore back Kelsey Thomas (Stonington, Conn.) made Wesleyan junior goalie Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass.) dive to her right to stop her shot from just above the right corner of the box in the eighth minute, and Tollman saved a shot by Trinity sophomore forward Abbey Lake (Westport, Conn.) one-on-one from the left flank moments later.  Thomas had another chance from almost the same spot with under three minutes left before intermission, but the ball sailed just wide.

Cardinal freshman midfielder Tess Daggett-Edenholm (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored the first goal of the game in the 62nd minute, converting on a quick pass in traffic by classmate Sarah Sylla (Ardsley, N.Y.).  Daggett-Edenholm just missed doubling the Wesleyan lead with a hard shot from the top-right corner of the box in the 74th minute, and Lake beat her defender but shot just off the mark to the right of the post for Trinity three minutes later.  Wesleyan sophomore forward Victoria Matthews (West Windsor, N.J.) blasted a shot from almost 40 yards away in the middle of the field to give the visitors a 2-0 lead with 11:29 remaining.  Senior tri-captain Hannah Knudsen (Yardley, Pa.) assisted on the play.

Tollman finished with three saves and Trinity sophomore backstop Monica DiFiori (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had two saves.  The Bantams had a 13-9 edge on shots and 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
