Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Senior tri-captain forward Krista
Zsitvay (New Vernon, N.J.) scored twice and sophomore Annika Nygren
(Sudbury, Mass.) netted the game-winner with 3:47 left in the
second half to lead the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a
3-2 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in the New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey
regular-season finale for both teams this evening on Sheppard
Field. Trinity closes the regular campaign with its first
setback in four games and an 8-6 overall mark, while the No.
7-ranked Lord Jeffs finish up at 12-2 overall after an 0-2 start to
the year. With a 5-5 league record, Trinity will be the No.
6-seed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament, and will open the
post-season at No. 3-seeded Bowdoin on Saturday, November 2 at 1
p.m. in the quarterfinals. Top-seeded Amherst, 9-1 in NESCAC
play, will host Wesleyan in its quarterfinal game on Saturday at 1
p.m.
After an early goal by Zsitvay from junior forward Madeline Tank
(Winnetka, Ill.) gave Amherst a 1-0 lead the halftime, Trinity
regrouped and tied the contest four minutes after the break on goal
by junior defender Sophie Doering (Darien, Conn.) off a penalty
corner. Bantam senior tri-captain defender Sarah Duncan
(Dedham, Mass.) and classmate Julia Rivera (Silver Spring, Md.)
assisted on the play.
A pair of penalty strokes accounted for all the scoring over the
next 24 minutes. Trinity rookie Samantha Sandler (Madison,
Conn.) converted on her second stroke in as many games just 1:35
after Doering's tally to give herself two goals on two shots
this season, and Zsitvay returned the favor with 6:59 remaining in
the second half. Nygren followed with the clincher from the
left side just past a diving Trinity sophomore goalie Sophie
Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.) just 3:12 later, although three
consecutive shots inside the last minute from close by Doering
after one final Bantam penalty corner were blocked, saved, and just
off the mark, respectively. Fitzpatrick made eight saves and
Amherst junior goalie Rachel Tannenbaum (Berwyn, Pa.) had seven
saves.
