Late Goal Against Tufts Keeps Trinity Men's Ice Hockey On A Roll

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – In the second game of his collegiate career, rookie Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Alaska) scored his second goal late in the third period to give the Trinity College Bantams a 4-3 win over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this afternoon on Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Trinity moves to 2-0 with their second win in as many days, while Tufts drops their second straight one-goal match to start the year with record of 0-2.

With just 3:50 remaining in the third period of a tied game, Cole received a perfectly placed pass from sophomore John Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario) and buried the game-winning shot in the top right corner of the Jumbos net. The goal broke a 3-3 tie in a game that had been scoreless for the previous 22:51.

The Trinity offense came out firing and didn't stop.  Junior Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.) got the scoring started with a goal 18 seconds in, on one of Trinity's 50 shots in the game.  Tufts sophomore Stewart Bell (Marietta, Ga.) tied the game at 1-1 in the ninth minute, but sophomore Elie Vered (Ottawa, Ontario) put the Bantams back on top, 2-1, with a goal just moments later, in the 13th minute of the game.  Tufts lost their starting goalkeeper to injury just over five minutes into the game.

The Jumbos came out strong in the second period, netting consecutive goals to take a 3-2 lead over Trinity.  The Tufts lead lasted just over one minute, when Hawkrigg disrupted Tufts' momentum with a game-tying goal, his team-high fifth point of the year.  The goal set the stage for an entertaining third period, when Cole delivered the finishing touch for the Bantams.  Trinity outshot tufts 18-11 in the third period, with Tufts making a strong push to tie the game before sound of the horn, to no avail.

Trinity senior goalie Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.) finished the game with 26 saves, while Tufts rookie Ryan Kellenberger (Los Altos, Calif.) came up with 43 saves in 54:39 minutes in net for the Jumbos.  Trinity outshot Tufts 50-29 in the game.
