Trinity Women's Hockey Upsets No. 7 Bowdoin with Late Goal

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Trinity rookie Shannon Farrell (Kennebunk, Maine) scored a game-winning goal with just 2:48 showing on the clock to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 upset win over the No. 7-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action this afternoon on Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports Center.  Trinity improves to 10-5-4 overall and 4-3-3 in the league, while Bowdoin drops to 14-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the NESCAC.

"That was a great character win for us against a very talented Bowdoin team," Head Coach Carson Duggan said after the game.  "We had some timely scoring and some huge goaltending, especially at the end of the game.  We know they are going to come even harder tomorrow, so we have to be prepared for it."

Both teams skated to a scoreless tie in the first period.  Trinity goalkeeper Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.) was put to work early, as the Bowdoin offense peppered 17 shots to Trinity's six in the opening frame.

Early in the second period, Trinity sophomore Lily Gacicia (Milton, Mass.) and first-year Elizabeth Caporale (Glastonbury, Conn.) had good looks at the net, but Bowdoin senior goalkeeper Kayla Lessard (Enfield, Conn.) came up with two nifty saves.  Bowdoin gained a five-on-three advantage later in period, but Trinity's power play unit came up clutch, killing the clock.  Immediately following, Trinity gained an advantage with back-to-back power plays, but this time it was the Bowdoin power play unit to step up under pressure and keep the game scoreless.

Bowdoin junior Madeline Lane (Topsham, Maine) broke the deadlock with a goal midway through the second period.  Trinity senior Rebecca Rosen (Syosset, N.Y.), who came up with a key defensive play on a Bowdoin breakaway moments earlier, tried to respond with a good look at the goal, but she was denied shot by Lessard.  Junior Abby Ostrom (Carlisle, Mass.) followed with a top shelf goal to tie the game at 1-1 and shift momentum in favor of the Bantams.

Action was slow in the third period, but jumped off at the tail end of the game.  With just 2:48 remaining in the period, Farrell lifted the puck on the top right corner of Bowdoin's net, which rattled the post, and redirected into the goal, giving the Bantams their first lead of the game, 2-1.

In the closing minutes of the game, Trinity was whistled for a penalty setting up Bowdoin for some prime opportunities, included a shot that deflected off the Trinity post at a 90 degree angle on the inside of the net before Pujol was able to kick it away.  With intensity high and significant commotion in front of the Trinity net, senior tri-captain Britney Ryan (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) prompted a collective sigh from the home crowd by flicking the puck out of Trinity's zone, as the clock ticked down to the end of the game.

Pujol came up with several big stops, finishing the game with 33 saves, while Lessard made 27 stops in net for the Polar Bears.

The teams dedicated tonight's game to the memory of Mandi Schwartz, a former Yale player who died from Leukemia.  Click here for more.
