– The Trinity College men's hockey team converted on four
power plays goals to knock off fourth-ranked Bowdoin, 10-5, in a
rescheduled game played at the Brooks School Monday evening in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
action. Trinity wraps up their regular campaign at
14-6-3 (11-4-3 NESCAC) and clinch the third seed and a home
game for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament. The Polar
Bears, who clinched the NESCAC's top seed last weekend, end their
regular season with a mark of 19-3-2 (13-3-1
NESCAC).
"We put forth a
great effort tonight," Head Coach Matt Greason said. "It was
nice to see our power play convert its chances. We also
played tough defensively against an explosive Bowdoin
team."
Trinity and Bowdoin traded power play goals in the opening frame.
Trinity senior tri-captain Zachary Lombardi scored at 6:58 for the
Bantams, while Timothy
McGarry scored with under five minutes remaining to even the
score at 1-1. Trinity answered quickly with a pair of goals, the
first coming just 36 seconds after McGarry's and another off a
power play opportunity.
Bowdoin closed within one goal, making the score 3-2, at 3:49 into
the second frame. Tim Coffey
provided Bowdoin with its second goal of the night before Trinity
ran away with three consecutive scores. A pair of man up goals at
6:40 and 11:05 gave the Bantams a 5-2 lead, before John Hawkrigg
added another under two minutes later. Ollie Koo
provided some offense with a goal as the final second ticked off
the clock.
Trinity carried its 6-3 lead into the final period, but wasted no
time before adding another goal. The Bantams rattled off three
goals over the opening five minutes to pad the score 9-3.
Bowdoin scored its only consecutive goals of the evening off the
sticks of Daniel
Weiniger at 5:56 and Robert
Toczylowski at 7:08. Bowdoin sat within four of Trinity before
Andrew Tallet tallied the final goal of evening.
The ten goal total was the highest offensive output of the season
for Trinity. The Polar Bears allowed more goals in this
outing than any other game this season. Bowdoin outshot Trinity
47-44, but the Bantams went 4-5 on the power play.
All three Bowdoin goalies saw time in net with Max Fenkell
recording 22 saves, Steve
Messina stopping 10, and Connor
Shannon blocking 2. Benjamin Coulthard stopped 42 shots in his
complete game performance.
Jordan So and Chris Menard had two goals and two assists each for
the Bantams. Ollie Koo had a goal and two assists for
Bowdoin.
Trinity will host rival Wesleyan on Saturday in the opening round
with game time TBA. Bowdoin begins its post-season play
hosting Hamilton College in the quarter final round of the NESCAC
Tournament on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
