Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) scored four times to lead the Trinity
College Bantams to a 19-2 victory over the visiting Augustana
College Vikings in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse
Championship Second Round this afternoon under the constant threat
of rain on Sheppard Field. The defending NCAA Champion
Bantams improve to 19-0 with their College-record 27th consecutive
win, setting a new Trinity record for wins in a season without a
loss, and advance to their eighth NCAA Quarterfinals and their
fourth in a row tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the College of New
Jersey. Augustana, in its second season as a varsity program,
closes its season at 17-4 with its first loss in 15
games.
Trinity built a 3-0 lead 2:03 into the game, as junior attacker
Shea Kusiak (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Leonhard scored 21 seconds
apart in the second minute of action, and senior attacker Hadley
Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) added a third Bantam tally just 10 seconds after
Leonhard's goal. Sophomore attacker Christina Letmanski
(Wheaton, Ill.) scored for Augustana with 26:23 on the clock,
converting on an assist by freshman attacker Emily Handrahan
(Hawthrone Woods, Ill.), but the Bantams answered with a nine-goal
run to put the contest away early. Leonhard started the scoring
streak 4:41 into the first half and scored twice during the run, as
did senior attacker Kaitlin Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa.) and first-year
midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.). Letmanski fed
sophomore midfielder Allie Roehrenback (Gahanna, Ohio) for a Viking
goal 8:13 before the break, but Trinity junior attacker Elizabeth
Heimann (Wyncote, Pa.) scored with 37 seconds left in the first
half, and Trinity outscored Augustana, 6-0, in the second
stanza.
Trinity took 33 shots, while the defense led by senior
tri-captain Mallory Hinman (Longmeadow, Mass.), senior Hillary
McNamara (Milton, Mass.), and juniors Midge Daniel (Wellesley,
Mass.) and Lyndsey Shepard (Hamilton, Mass.) held the Vikings to
just six shots. Trinity had a 17-5 edge on the draw and
converted on three of its five free-position shots while stopping
the Vikings on their lone free-position shot. Leonhard added
a game-high five draw controls to her four goals, while Hildebrand
finished with two goals and two assists, and Heimann and sophomore
midfielder Caroline Hayes (Greenland, N.H.) notched two goals and
one assists apiece. Bantam rookie defender Ashley Stewart
(Dover, Mass.) added a game-high four groundballs, and classmate
Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) made two saves of the team's
three saves. Sophomore defender Bridget Conniff (Downers
Grove, Ill.) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while
classmate Sarah Osier (Naperville, Ill.) made eight saves in goal
for Augustana.
