Trinity Women's Lacrosse Takes Care Of Augustana Early In NCAA Second Round

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Senior tri-captain midfielder Megan Leonhard (Summit, N.J.) scored four times to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 19-2 victory over the visiting Augustana College Vikings in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Second Round this afternoon under the constant threat of rain on Sheppard Field.  The defending NCAA Champion Bantams improve to 19-0 with their College-record 27th consecutive win, setting a new Trinity record for wins in a season without a loss, and advance to their eighth NCAA Quarterfinals and their fourth in a row tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the College of New Jersey.  Augustana, in its second season as a varsity program, closes its season at 17-4 with its first loss in 15 games.

Trinity built a 3-0 lead 2:03 into the game, as junior attacker Shea Kusiak (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Leonhard scored 21 seconds apart in the second minute of action, and senior attacker Hadley Duncan (Rye, N.Y.) added a third Bantam tally just 10 seconds after Leonhard's goal.  Sophomore attacker Christina Letmanski (Wheaton, Ill.) scored for Augustana with 26:23 on the clock, converting on an assist by freshman attacker Emily Handrahan (Hawthrone Woods, Ill.), but the Bantams answered with a nine-goal run to put the contest away early. Leonhard started the scoring streak 4:41 into the first half and scored twice during the run, as did senior attacker Kaitlin Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa.) and first-year midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.).  Letmanski fed sophomore midfielder Allie Roehrenback (Gahanna, Ohio) for a Viking goal 8:13 before the break, but Trinity junior attacker Elizabeth Heimann (Wyncote, Pa.) scored with 37 seconds left in the first half, and Trinity outscored Augustana, 6-0, in the second stanza.

Trinity took 33 shots, while the defense led by senior tri-captain Mallory Hinman (Longmeadow, Mass.), senior Hillary McNamara (Milton, Mass.), and juniors Midge Daniel (Wellesley, Mass.) and Lyndsey Shepard (Hamilton, Mass.) held the Vikings to just six shots.  Trinity had a 17-5 edge on the draw and converted on three of its five free-position shots while stopping the Vikings on their lone free-position shot.  Leonhard added a game-high five draw controls to her four goals, while Hildebrand finished with two goals and two assists, and Heimann and sophomore midfielder Caroline Hayes (Greenland, N.H.) notched two goals and one assists apiece.  Bantam rookie defender Ashley Stewart (Dover, Mass.) added a game-high four groundballs, and classmate Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) made two saves of the team's three saves.  Sophomore defender Bridget Conniff (Downers Grove, Ill.) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while classmate Sarah Osier (Naperville, Ill.) made eight saves in goal for Augustana.
