Early Lead Not Enough For Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Against Williams At Fenway Park

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - The Trinity College men's ice hockey team opened up a 2-0 lead before four Eph goals in the final period gave Williams College a 4-2 victory over the Bantams outdoors and under the lights at historic Fenway Park this evening.  Trinity falls to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and falls short of avenging a season-ending loss to the Ephs in last year's NESCAC Semifinals by the same score.  Williams, ranked No. 7 in the nation, improves to 7-1-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the conference.

"We executed for 55 minutes but it takes a 60-minute effort to win against a nationally-ranked opponent," stated Trinity Head Coach Matt Greason.  "This was a tremendous experience for the guys and for our program, but unfortunately we fell short of the ending we were looking for."

Trinity junior forward Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.) excited the Bantam crowd of over several hundred alums, parents, students, and friends early with his eighth goal of the year and his fourth in the last two games just 4:35 into the game from sophomore forward Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario) and rookie forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.).  The game remained 1-0 Bantams into the first intermission that saw Williams outshoot Trinity, 7-4, but fail to put the puck past Trinity senior goalie Ben Coulthard (South Windsor, Conn.).

In the second frame, the offensive intensity increased as Coulthard made 13 stops and Williams junior backstop Sean Dougherty (Smithtown, N.Y.) had 11 saves, but the Bantams upped their lead to 2-0 at the 11:48 mark when Orlando poked the puck in after an initial shot from the point by junior captain defenseman Michael Flynn (Cheshire, Conn.).  Bantam junior forward Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y.) tipped the rebound of Flynn's shot to Orlando for the rookie's team-leading ninth tally of the year.

Williams cut its deficit in half just 28 seconds into the third frame when freshman forward George Hunkele (West Haven, Conn.) scored short-handed from junior blueliner David Jarrett (Edina, Minn.).  The teams peppered the goalies with five combined shots on goal over the next 1:17, but a power-play goal by Eph senior forward Nick Anderson (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) 2:25 into the third knotted the game at 2-2.

Williams took the lead, 3-2, on a wrister from the left wing by rookie defenseman Frankie Mork (Victoria, Minn.) at 6:19 during another Eph power play.  Halfway into the third frame, the teams switched ends to even up the heavy wind factor, and Trinity managed seven shots against Dougherty but all were turned away.  The Ephs added an empty netter in the final minute by junior forward Craig Kitto (Ashburn, Va.).  Coulthard finished with 30 saves and Dougherty had 24.  Trinity committed only three penalties to six for Williams, but the Ephs converted on two of them.

"I would like to extend a hearty thanks to the Fenway Sports Group for providing NESCAC hockey and Trinity College such a unique opportunity and such a great experience for our student-athletes," said Trinity Athletic Director Mike Renwick. "It was great to see so many of the Trinity faithful in attendance, braving the elements to support the current student-athletes and be part of a memory that will last forever."
