Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore forward Pam Schulman
(Greenwich, Conn.) knocked home the game's only goal
to lead the visiting Middlebury College Panthers to a 1-0 victory
over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action this afternoon on
Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 17 in the nation, drops
to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in the NESCAC with its first loss in six
games, while No. 2-ranked Middlebury improves to 10-1 overall and
6-1 in the league with its sixth straight victory. The
Panthers take over sole possession of first place in the
NESCAC.
A scoreless first half saw Trinity take three shots and
Middlebury shoot just one, but Schulman scored from junior defender
Shannon Hutteman (Webster, N.Y.) 7:56 into the
second stanza. Trinity had a penalty corner with 10 seconds
on the clock, and senior co-captain defender Sophie Doering
(Darien, Conn.) got a shot on Middlebury goalie
Emily Knapp (Scarsdale, N.Y.), but the Panther
rookie came up with her third save of the afternoon to preserve the
shutout. Trinity junior Sophie Fitzpatrick (Duxbury,
Mass.) totaled five saves and yielded her first goal since
September 20, as the Bantams outshot the Panthers, 7-6, and held a
10-to-6 edge on penalty corners.
