Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College women's soccer team fell to Eastern Connecticut State, 3-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Campus Field. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Bantams as the team moved to 6-5-1 on the year, while the Warriors won their third straight contest to improve to 8-5-1. The defeat also marked the first time in 2014 that Trinity dropped an out of league tilt.
The Bantams struck first as sophomore midfielder Kendra Lena (Madison, Conn.) netted her second goal of the season to give Trinity a 1-0 advantage two minutes into the game. Following Lena's tally, the hosts held the lead until late in the opening half as Eastern Connecticut State scored twice in the final 11 minutes to enter halftime with a 2-1 edge. Freshman forward Emily Becher tied the game at one with her team-leading eighth goal and classmate Nikki Basilicato gave the Warriors the lead with her third collegiate marker.
The Bantams had a golden opportunity to stretch their lead early in the first half as Lena fired a shot that hit the cross bar from straight on just inside the box.
In the second half, senior midfielder Rachel Skinner gave the visitors a two-goal lead scoring the eventual game winner in the 78th minute. Trinity battled back down the stretch as senior forward Karyn Barrett (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored her team-high seventh goal of the year with under seven minutes remaining in regulation. Down the stretch, the Bantams took three shots, but none of them made it on target as the Warriors held on for the victory.
Eastern Connecticut junior goalkeeper Rachel Skelton made four saves to earn her fifth victory, while junior Monica DiFiori (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) turned aside four shots in a losing effort for the Bantams.
Trinity held a 24-9 advantage in shots and took nine corner kicks to the Warriors three.
Trinity returns to action next Tuesday, Oct. 21, with a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road contest versus Wesleyan. The match with the Cardinals is slated to get underway at 3:00 p.m.
