Trinity Field Hockey Erupts For Six Goals In Second Half To Beat Wesleyan

Box Score

Middletown, Conn. - First-year forward Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) notched four goals, including the game-winner 11 seconds into the second half that broke a 2-2 tie, and added a pair of assists to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to an 8-2 victory over the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey action this evening.  Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the nation, improves to 10-3 with its third consecutive win, while the Cardinals fall to 3-10 overall and 2-6 in the league with their fifth setback in a row and their fourth straight loss against the Bantams.

Trinity reached its highest point total since an 8-0 win over Westfield State in the 2008 season opener, scoring six times after the break.  The Bantams trailed, 2-1, after a Wesleyan goal by Lauren Yue with 10:32 left in the first half, but tied it with just under five minutes remaining before the break when Finn knocked in a high pass by sophomore forward Casey Quinn (Providence, R.I.) from close on the left side of the cage after a penalty corner.  Finn tipped in a long shot by fellow rookie Brenna Hobin (Madison, Conn.) for the clincher off the opening of the second half, and the Bantams rattled off four goals in a 14-minute span to put the game out of reach before adding the eighth tally in the final minute.

Yue and Vanessa Block assisted Hannah Plappert for the game's first goal off a penalty corner to give the home team a 1-0 edge 6:03 into the contest.  After a 15-minute scoring drought, Finn brought the ball down the field and maneuvered through the Cardinal defense on her way to a game-tying, unassisted goal with 13:37 left in the first half.  Trinity held a 9-5 advantage shooting at the break, and increased to 24-11 at the end of the game.  Hobin finished with a goal and two assists, while classmate Samantha Sandler (Madison, Conn.) scored on a perfect penalty stroke into the upper-right corner of the cage and added a pair of defensive saves.  Trinity junior goalie Sophie Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.) had six saves, including four in a 2:30 span late in the second half, while two Cardinals combined for 11 stops.
