Box Score Amherst, Mass. – Senior forward Elisa Dolan (Bethesda, Md.) scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick in the 103rd minute to lead the Trinity College women's soccer team past Amherst, 1-0, in double overtime in the regular season finale on Tuesday evening in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action at Gooding Field. With the win, the Bantams improved to 8-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in league games, while the Lord Jeffs fell to 11-4-0 on the year and 7-3-0 in conference tilts. The victory was third straight for Trinity versus Amherst and the Bantams will enter the NESCAC Championship Tournament as the No. 6 seed this weekend.
Trinity junior goalkeeper Monica DiFiori (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) continued her strong play between the pipes, turning aside all seven shots she faced to earn the victory and record her seventh shutout this season, which ranks second all-time in a single season in program history. On the opposite end, Holly Burwick made three saves in a losing effort for Amherst.
In the first half, Trinity senior forward Karyn Barrett (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was the only player to fire a shot on goal as the team's entered halftime scoreless.
After the break, Amherst had the first scoring chance as Meghan Kim fired a shot from the top of the box that DiFiori stopped. After trading scoring opportunities, DiFiori once again made a key save stopping a header by Emily Hester with 23 minutes remaining in regulation. With just under 13 minutes left in the second half, Amherst had its best scoring opportunity as Hannah Guzzi took a shot that deflected off the crossbar and came back into the field of play, but didn't cross the goalline. Following Guzzi's chance, neither team could break through as the two conference rivals entered overtime.
In the first overtime period, Amherst had several chances off a corner kick in the first minute as DiFiori made a save and a Trinity defender stopped another shot to keep the game scoreless. Trinity sophomore midfielder Kendra Lena (Madison, Conn.) set up the game-winning score for her fourth assist of the season.
Amherst held a slight 16-13 advantage in shots and the Lord Jeffs took eight corners to the Bantams three.
Trinity will travel to face in-state rival third-seeded Connecticut College in the opening round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 1. The Bantams look to avenge a 4-0 setback versus the Camels last weekend.
