Box Score Brunswick, Maine – The Trinity College volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Friday evening, topping Bowdoin, 3-1, to score an important New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory at Morrell Gymnasium. With the 28-26, 12-25, 29-27 and 25-20 triumph, the Bantams improve to 10-4 on the year on 2-2 in league action, while the Polar Bears dropped their second contest in a row to fall to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Trinity snapped a five-game losing streak to Bowdoin and avenged a season-ending defeat in last year's NESCAC Tournament.
Junior tri-captain Kate Giddens (Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif.) once again led the Trinity offense, registering a team-high 14 kills with an attack percentage of .263. Classmate and fellow tri-captain Hunter Drews (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had another quality game for the Bantams adding nine kills and first-year outside hitter Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.) tallied seven kills for the visitors. The setting duo of junior Gina Buzzelli (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Randi Whitham (South Weymouth, Mass.) combined for 31 assists with Buzzelli picking up 17 and Whitham tallying 14.
Offensively, junior outside hitter Christy Jewett paced the Bowdoin attack thanks to a match-high 19 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Erika Sklaver added 10 of her own. Junior right side Hailey Wahl contributed eight kills, while Michelle Albright and Clare Geyer each had seven kills apiece. Quincy Leech had a game-best 29 assists and Clare McInerney added 17 assists.
Defensively, the Polar Bears were led by Katie Doherty with 24 digs and Sklaver added four block assists. For the Bantams, first-year defensive specialist Grace Metry (Grosse Point Park, Mich.) had a team-leading 19 digs and Giddens added 14.
Trinity concludes a road NESCAC weekend of action in the Pine Tree State on Saturday, Oct. 4, with a conference clash with Colby inside Wadsworth Gymnasium starting at 2:00 p.m. The Bantams look to stay hot against the Mules having won the last six meetings between the two.
