Box Score Amherst, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams skated to a 2-2 overtime tie against the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Amherst College Lord Jeffs in women's ice hockey action this afternoon at Orr Rink. Trinity, which dropped a 4-2 decision in the series opener at Amherst last evening, is now 10-7-5 overall and 5-6-3 in the NESCAC, while the No. 10-ranked Lord Jeffs move to 12-5-5 overall and 8-2-4 in conference play.
Much like the previous game when Trinity scored in the opening minutes, today's game featured another quick goal, this time from the home team. With a loose puck in front of the Bantams' net, Sara Culhane dove to make contact and sneak the puck past Trinity senior goalie Alexa Pujol (New Canaan, Conn.) for a 1-0 Amherst lead at 2:02 of the first period. The lead was short-lived, as the Bantams retaliated 2:07 later when senior captain forward Lauren Glynn (Tucson, Ariz.) finished off a similar play and tied the game at 1-1. She was assisted by fellow senior captain forward Emily Kleidon (Oakdale, Minn.) and sophomore defender Shelby Labe (Pinebrook, N.J.) on the play. Seconds later, Trinity had its first power-play and capitalized on its opportunity. With a player advantage, Glynn sent a shot at net directly in front of goal that hit off the pads of Amherst net-minder Kerri Stuart. The puck dropped in front of junior forward Lauren Fitzgerald (Milton, Mass.) who backhanded the shot to the top right corner and Trinity grabbed a 2-1 lead just five minutes into the opening frame.
Amherst held a 5-on-3 advantage five minutes into the second period. Erin Martin sent a cross pass from the right goal line to Tori Salmon but her one-timer attempt at the left post deflected off the top of her stick. After the scoreless second frame, Martin found the puck off a rebound and sent it past Pujol for a power-play goal, although Pujol stopped Salmon one-on-one to keep the game tied later in the third. Pujol shined again in overtime, blocking a hard shot with her pads and sticking outher leg out to make a spectacular save on the rebound attempt. Stuart made 19 stops between the posts, while Pujol recorded 36 saves including nine in overtime.
