Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Sophomore attacker Kelan McCann
(Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored two goals and classmate Hannah Jeffrey
(Greenwich, Conn.) made 12 saves in goal to lead the visiting Bates
College Bobcats to a 6-3 shocking upset win over the No. 2-ranked
Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon on
Sheppard Field. Trinity falls to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the
NESCAC with its first regular-season loss since a 7-6 setback to
Amherst on April 25, 2012 (18 games). Bates improves to 5-1
overall and 2-1 in the league with its fourth consecutive victory
and its first win over the Bantams since 2005, a streak of 10
games.
Bates opened up a 3-0 lead over the first 10 minutes, beginning
with a quick catch-and-shoot by sophomore attacker Moriah
Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) from senior attacker Bridget Meedzan
(Ipswich, Mass.) 2:48 into the contest. With 22:31 remaining,
Meedzan fed McCann for a second Bobcat goal after a Trinity
turnover, and Bates senior attacker Blair Shrewsbury (Boxford,
Mass.) scored from the left wing after a pass ahead by sophomore
midfielder Cara Cappelini (Manhasset, N.Y.) with 20:53 on the
clock.
Trinity senior tri-captain attacker Kathleen Timmons (Branford,
Conn.) scored the first of her two free-position goals to put the
home team on the board with 19:08 left in the first half.
Jeffrey made a pair of saves on close chances, one by Timmons on a
free position and another against junior midfielder Lindsay
Mullaney (Wellesley, Mass.), over the next 10 minutes before
Meedzan scored for Bates on a free-position shot with 8:58 left
before the break. Bantam senior tri-captain Shea Kusiak
(Longmeadow, Mass.) nearly cut the Bobcat lead in half twice in the
final minutes, but Jeffrey saved her high shot on a free position
and a second Kusiak bid caromed off the right post.
Trailing, 4-1, at intermission, Trinity yielded a quick goal in
the second stanza, when Bobcat senior tri-captain midfielder Wally
Pierce (Weston, Mass.) converted on a free position 17 seconds
after halftime. Timmons returned the favor at the 24:03 mark
of the second half with a man-up goal, and Kusiak flipped in a
quick underhanded goal by Jeffrey from 15 feet away to pull the
Bantams back within two goals at 5-3 with 10:27 left to play.
The score remained the same for over seven minutes until McCann
received a pass over the goal by Greenstein and shot immediately
into an open Bantam goal with sophomore keeper Emily Mooney (New
York, N.Y.) out putting extra pressure on the ball. Trinity
forced two Bates turnovers in the final 1:30, but the Bobcats took
the ball back on a Bantam turnover each time to preserve the
win.
Trinity sophomore midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.)
picked up a game-high four ground balls and added two draw controls
and two caused turnovers, while junior midfielder Caroline Hayes
(Greenfield, N.H.) added a game-high three caused turnovers, and
Mooney finished with two saves. Pierce led both teams with four
draw controls, while Cappellini had two ground balls and two caused
turnovers. Trinity outshot the Bobcats, 24-10, held a
15-to-10 edge on ground balls, and forced 24 Bobcat turnovers while
committing 14.
