Box Score Waterville, Maine – The Trinity College women's ice hockey team surrendered a late one-goal lead before eventually falling 3-2 in overtime versus Colby in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Frida night at Alfond Rink. With the loss, the Bantams move to 10-5-1 on the year and 3-5-1 in league play, while the Mules won their second straight to improve to 10-8-0 overall and 3-8-0 in conference tilts.
With Trinity on the power play midway through overtime, Colby junior defender Kat Mackey netted the game-winning goal with her team shorthanded. Mackey's tally was unassisted and was her first of the season.
Between the pipes, first-year netminder Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) made a career-high 42 saves in a losing effort for the Bantams. On the opposite end, freshman goaltender Jessica Thulin turned aside 38 shots to earn her seventh career win for the Mules.
After a scoreless first period, Colby opened the scoring as senior forward Lauren Guarente potted the first of her two goals on the night with under a minute left in the second stanza. Trinity answered quickly as senior captain Lily Gacicia (Milton, Mass.) netted her first of the season just 18 seconds after Guarente's tally. On Gacicia's marker, senior forward Lucy Robinson (Toronto, Ontario) registered her team-leading 16th assist of the year.
Five minutes into the third period, Robinson scored her ninth of the season to give Trinity a 2-1 lead. Junior forward Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.) did a nice job setting up the play to give Trinity their first lead of the game as she recorded her 13th helper.
Just under four minutes later, Guarente struck again for Colby, this time on the power play, to knot the game at two. Her second of the contest and 10th of the year stole the momentum away from the visitors as Jackie Tavella and Jackie Seymour picked up the assists.
Colby held a 45-40 advantage in shots and converted one of the five power-play opportunities. On special teams, the Bantams went 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
Trinity and Colby conclude a weekend NESCAC series tomorrow, Jan. 31, with puckdrop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The Bantams look to take the second game in a conference series for the second straight weekend.
