Trinity Women's Soccer Beaten By Amherst In Regular Season Finale

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – The visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs avenged three losses in the last two years against the Trinity College Bantams with a 6-0 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon.  Trinity closes the regular season with a 10-5 record and a 6-4 mark in the NESCAC, while the Lord Jeffs close out at 10-2-2 overall and 6-2-2 in the league.  Trinity, which had a two-game winning streak snapped, had beaten Amherst, 1-0, and 2-1, in 2013 and, 2-1, last year.  Trinity will open NESCAC Championship Tournament play on Saturday, October 31 with a home quarterfinal game against Bates at noon.  Amherst, ranked No. 19 in the nation, will host Middlebury in its quarterfinal match on Saturday.

In the opening minutes of play, Trinity junior forward Andi Nicholson (Grafton, Mass.) nearly scored as played the ball through her defender's legs to get off her shot from 15 yards away on the right wing.  Amherst took the game's next six shots, however, and took a 2-0 lead early on goals by junior Ashlyn Heller (Mendham, N.J.) and Megan Kim (Newport Beach, Calif.).  Heller scored from just inside the box after Trinity senior tri-captain goalkeeper Monica DiFiori (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had punched out a corner kick by Lord Jeff sophomore Delancey King (Belmont, Mass.) in the eighth minute.  Kim scored less than five minutes later, and junior Emily Hester (Washington, D.C.) added a third Amherst goal in the 36th minute.

Trinity's best chance of the second half came in the 57th minute, when sophomore Sarah Connors (Winnetka, Ill.) placed a direct kick over the Amherst defense but not high enough to get it over the outstretched arms of Lord Jeff senior goalie Holly Burwick (New Canaan, Conn.).  Amherst added three late markers in the final 14 minutes of play, as six different Lord Jeffs found the back of the net in the game.  DiFiori finished with nine saves and Burwick made six.  Amherst finished with a 21-to-10 shooting advantage.
