Box Score Hartford, Conn. - Junior Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Alaska) scored just 31 seconds into overtime to lift the Trinity College men's hockey team past the Elmira College Soaring Eagles in a thriller on Saturday evening. Trinity improves to 5-2-1 on the year while Elmira falls to 6-5-0.
Both teams played a high-pace back and forth first period for the first 10 minutes. Trinity found themselves on a power play at the 8:59 mark after Elmira was called for hooking and had a great chance at a goal when sophomore forward Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.) sent a pass in front of the net to senior captain Ellie Vered (Ottowa, Ontario), but Vered was stoned by Soaring Eagles goalie Sandro Aeschlimann (Zäziwil, Switzerland). Elmira was later able to make the best of a power play thanks to a goal from Jarryd ten Vaanholt (West Vancouver, B.C.) that put the Soaring Eagles up 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
Elmira was sent to the penalty box early in the second period, giving the Bantams a power play that sophomore forward Brad Buvinow (Turnersville, N.J.) converted on when he buried the puck in the back of the net via an assist from Vered. The rest of the period did not see any scoring despite 12 combined penalty minutes between the two teams, sending the game tied, 1-1, into the second intermission.
In the third period, the teams were forced to play four-on-four hockey due to two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, however neither team was able to break the tie. The rest of the period went without a scoring play, sending the game into overtime.
Wasting no time in the extra session, Cole sent Trinity fans home happy after burying the puck in the back of the net via an assist from freshman Ross Mandigo (Stowe, Vt.), just 0:31 seconds in.
Bantam sophomore goalie Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Qubec) remained perfect this season, improving to 3-0-0 after stopping 31 shots on the evening. Aeschlimann recorded 42 saves despite the losing effort, and loses his first game this season. The Bantams out shot the Soaring Eagles 44-31.
Trinity does not return to the ice until January 2, when they travel Norwich Universtity for the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament. They are scheduled to take on Manhattanville in their first game at 4:00 p.m.
