Women's Hockey Falls at Home to Amherst

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - The Trinity College women's hockey team dropped their second game in a row to the Amherst Purple & White at home, 6-3, on Saturday evening. The Bantams move to 1-4 on the year and remain winless in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play while Amherst improves to 4-0.

Amherst got on the board first in the first period thanks to a goal by junior Lynndy Smith (Glendale, Ariz.) just 4:47 in. The two teams played clean hockey, sans one Trinity penalty, for the majority of the first frame with the Bantams sending a flurry of shots towards Amherst sophomore goalie Sabrina Dobbins (Bedford, N.H.), but to no avail as the home team found themselves down 1-0 entering the first intermission.

Amherst wasted no time getting on the board in the second period as sophomore forward Alex Toupal (New Brighton, Minn.) found the back of the net for the third time in two days to put the Purple & White up 2-0 just 28 seconds into the period. Trinity answered a few minutes later as sophomore forward Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season, assisted by senior captain Shannon Farrell (Kennebunk, Maine). The score remained 2-1 until Amherst senior Erin Martin (Canton, Mass.) scored a short-handed goal with 22 seconds remaining in the period to send it 3-1 into the second intermission.

Amherst added another goal from Toupal, seven minutes into the 3rd period, but Farrell put a pass from junior Jessica Stowell (Hadley, Mass.) past Dobbins to keep the Trinity deficit at two goals. Down two with 7:40 remaining, the Bantams pulled goalie Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) from the net to gain an extra attacker, however, Toupal was able to handle the puck for Amherst and send a shot into the wide open net to go up 5-2. Trinity answered once again, just 18 seconds later, as senior forward Emma Tani (Orange, Calif.) assisted sophomore Hannah Oganeku (Castle Pines, Colo.) for the Bantam goal, moving the score to 5-3 in favor of Amherst.

Trinity went with an empty net once again, but once again Amherst was able to control the puck near center ice and score an empty-netter, this time by sophomore Brenna Sullivan (Lockport, Ill.), putting the game out of reach at 6-3, the final score.

Belinskas finished with 28 saves despite the losing effort while Dobbins picks up her fourth win of the season after stopping 26 Trinity shots. The Bantams return to action next Saturday, December 12, when they host Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m.
