Men's Hockey Stumbles at Amherst

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - The No. 8 Amherst College men's ice hockey team took advantage of two power play opportunities, and scored three goals in the third period en route to a 4-2 win over the defending national champions and No. 3 ranked Trinity College men's hockey team on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Bantams to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action.

It didn't take long for Trinity to get on the board as junior forward Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.) skated down the left side of the ice, wrapped around the goal, and snuck the puck behind Amherst goalie Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass.) to give the Bantams a 1-0 lead just 1:18 into the game. Amherst, however, answered back when Max Roche (Chicago, Ill.) found Stanley Brenner (Boca Raton, Fla.) who sent a slapshot to the back of the net, past Bantam senior goalie Nano Heilbron (West Vancouver, B.C.) with just a second remaining on an Amherst 5:00 power play. Amherst had another scoring opportunity at the end of the first period but a shot sent towards the net was picked out of the air by Heilbron to keep things knotted at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Neither team scored in the second period, despite scoring opportunities by both teams. In the third period, Amherst took the lead when Topher Flanagan (Edmonton, Alberta) handled the puck behind the left side of the net, and found a streaking White in front of the goal who scored on a one-timer. The Bantams needed a goal, and got one just 50 seconds later when senior captain Elie Vered (Ottowa, Ontario) sent a shot towards Cunningham that bounce off the goalies pads, right to junior forward Ethan Holdaway (Glastonbury, Conn.) who cleaned up the rebound to tie things at 2-2 with a little less than 12:00 remaining in the game.

With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Amherst netted what would prove to be the game-winner, just seven seconds into a power play via another goal from Conor Brown (Greely, Ontario). Trinity was forced to go with an empty net with time running out, and had a handful of shots on net, however to no avail. Flanagan scored his second goal of the game when he handled the puck in Amherst's defensive zone and sent the puck down ice into the empty net, sealing a 4-2 victory for the home team.

Heilbron finished with 26 saves despite the losing effort while Cunningham stopped 34 Trinity shots. The Bantams return to action next Friday when they host Hobart at 7:30 p.m.
