Women's Lacrosse Explodes for 14 Goals in NESCAC Win Versus Williams

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – Midfielders Caroline Hayes (Greenland, N.H.) and Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) each netted four goals apiece to lead the No. 9 Trinity College women's lacrosse team to a 14-7 victory versus Williams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Sheppard Field. With their second straight victory, the Bantams improve to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play, while the Ephs moved to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference tilts.

After Williams opened the scoring on a tally from senior midfielder Hillary Cook just under two and a half minutes into, the Bantams reeled off six straight goals over the next 20 minutes to build a commanding 6-1 advantage. During the run, senior Renee Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) tied the game at one and Griffin's first marker of the day 10 minutes into play gave Trinity a lead they would not surrender for the remainder of the contest. Following Griffin's marker, junior Abby McQuillan (Medfield, Mass.), sophomore Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) and Hayes scored.

The Ephs stopped the Trinity run with 6:44 left in the first half as senior Bridget Malicki scored her seventh of the season. The hosts ended the opening 30 minutes with two unanswered goals as Simpson scored an unassisted tally on a nice run to the cage and Griffin buried a free-position shot as Trinity held an 8-2 advantage heading into halftime.

Senior Becca Bell pulled the visitors within five at 8-3 three and a half minutes into the second half with a free-position goal. The hosts answered with a three-goal spurt over the next five minutes to stretch their lead to eight at 11-3 as Simpson, Hayes and Olsen all found the back of the net. With under 20 minutes remaining in regulation, the Ephs made it a game with three straight free-position tallies. The hosts weathered the run and put the game out of reach by scoring three of the tilt's last four goals.

Hayes had a game-high six points thanks to four markers and two assists. The fourth-year starter also had two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Griffin had one helper to go along with her four goals and the junior added a game-high five draw controls, four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Simpson had three tallies and one assist for the Bantams and Olsen had her second multi-goal game of the year. On the defensive side of the ball, junior Ashley Stewart (Dover, Mass.) had a team-high three caused turnover and four groundballs.

Cook led the offensive charge for Williams with three goals, highlighted by a pair of free-position tallies. Malicki was the other Eph to register a multi-point game with two markers. Junior midfielder Natalie Gill had a team-high four draw controls, while Bell added three of her own. On the defensive end, senior Emily Gerber cased a team-leading three turnovers and Molly Belk scooped three groundballs.

Between the pipes, junior goaltender Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) made four saves to record her second victory of the season for Trinity and first-year Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped three shots in relief for the Bantams. A trio of netminder saw time for Williams as sophomore Brett Bistrup got the start and surrendered four goals in a losing effort. In relief, sophomore Margaret Draper turned aside four shots and sophomore Sara Lehman made on save for the Ephs.

Williams held a 22-21 advantage in shots, while the Bantams had a slight 18-15 edge in ground balls. Trinity won 13 draw controls to Williams 10 and both teams converted four free-position shots.

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 10, with a home non-conference contest versus Wheaton at 6:00 p.m.
