Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity women's volleyball team lost 3-2 to Western Connecticut State on Tuesday night in Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity won the first set by a score of 27-25 before losing the next two, 25-19, and 25-16. The Bantams would win set four by a score of 25-19 before losing the deciding fifth set, 15-9. Trinity moves to 2-2 on the year while Western Connecticut State improves to 4-5.
The Bantams were led by senior captain and recent New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Kate Giddens (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) who led all players with 20 kills on 44 total attacks and three aces. Senior Hunter Drews (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also had a good game, tallying 10 kills of her own, while senior Gina Buzzelli (Cheshire, Conn.) led the team with 36 assists. For the Colonials, Karissa Smith (Bristol, Conn.) and Jacqueline Kanuk (New Fairfield, Conn.) combined for 29 kills while Danielle Kaminsky (Southington, Conn.) had 34 assists.
In the first set, Trinity got out to an early 5-1 lead behind strong play from Giddens and Rachel Underwood (Danville, Calif.), however Western Connecticut State would go on a 15-9 run and force the Bantams to take a timeout trailing 16-14. The teams would trade points back and forth, with Western Connecticut State Taking a 23-21 lead late in the set, but the Bantams would tie it back up after consecutive kills by Giddens and Underwood. Trinity would eventually win the set on a missile of an ace by sophomore Claudia Varner (Port Washington, N.Y.) to take a 1-0 lead.

The second set was won by Western Connecticut State, 25-19, as the Colonials got off to an early lead and held on to tie things up at 1-1. In set three, Western Connecticut State got out to a commanding 15-9 lead and never looked back, winning 25-16.
In set four, it was the Bantams with a 14-11 lead, forcing the Colonials to call a timeout to try and regroup. Trinity would go on an 11-8 run and finish the set via a Giddens kill to force a deciding 5th set.
Set five would be won by the Colonials 15-9 as they got out to an early lead which proved to be too much for the Bantams.
Trinity returns to action on Friday, hosting Colby in their first NESCAC matchup of the season, before playing Bates at home on Saturday.
