Trinity Women's Ice Hockey Opens 2016 With Bitter Overtime Loss To St. Anselm

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - Junior forward Alison Quinn (Canton, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal 1:14 into overtime to lead the visiting St. Anselm College Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in women's ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink.  Trinity, which led, 3-2, until 1:07 remained in regulation, drops to 2-5, while the NCAA Division II Hawks improve to 8-1 with their fourth consecutive win.

St. Anselm opened the scoring 2:22 into the game on an unassisted goal by junior forward Alison Butler (Danvers, Mass).  Trinity answered quickly when senior captain forward Shannon Farrell (Kennebunk, Maine) won a face-off and played the puck ahead to sophomore forward Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) who beat St. Anselm junior goalie Hannah Synnott (Montclair, N.J.) to her stick side with wrist shot from the right wing 2:22 into the game.  Trinity took a 2-1 lead 10:43 into the opening stanza on a shot from straight-on by senior defender Shelby Labe (Pine Brook, N.J.) that was redirected by sophomore forward Melissa Maffeo (Melrose, Mass.).  St. Anselm evened the game at 2-2 later in the first on a goal by rookie forward Sara McNamara (Danbury, Conn.).

An odd second period ensued that included fast up-and-down play but very few scoring chances, as the squads combined for just seven shots on goal in the 20 minutes with many attempts sailing wide or getting blocked by the defenses.  Trinity broke the scoring drought 2:58 into the final period on a Farrell tip during a power play off the initial shot from the top of the left face-off circle by senior forward Emma Tani (Orange, Calif.).

The score remained, 3-2, as Trinity sophomore goaltender Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) made 17 of her 38 saves in the final frame, but St. Anselm senior forward Sarah Gesinger (Willoughby, Ohio) tied it with 1:07 on the clock on a rebound of hard shot by Butler from the left side.  In overtime, Hawk senior forward Alex Kazmer (Crystal Lake, Ill.) won a battle for the puck at her own blue line and pushed it ahead to Quinn for the clincher.  Synnott finished with 13 saves for the Hawks who outshot the Bantams, 42-16.
