Women's Soccer's Win Streak Halted by 2-1 Loss to Middlebury

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. - The Middlebury Panthers ended the Trinity College Bantams seven-game win streak on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action in Hartford. Trinity falls to 8-2-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play, putting them tied for third with Middlebury in NESCAC standings as the Panthers improve to 10-2 on the year.

Middlebury struck first in the 29th minute after a corner kick taken by senior Amy Martin (Sandy Hook, Conn.) found the head of junior Alissa Huntington (San Francisco, Calif.) that redirected into the back ot the net, past the outstretched arm of Bantam junior goalie Julia Pitino (Littleton, Mass.). Both teams played an evenly matched first half with both squads firing four shots on goal while Middlebury earned the only corner kick.

The Panthers were awarded a free-kick during the 49th minute just outside of Trinity's box that was taken by senior Adrianna Gildner (Woodinville, Wash.). Gildner blasted around the Trinity defensive wall, into the top left shelf of the goal to put the visitors up, 2-0, early in the second half.

Trinity got on the board just a few minutes later after a wacky series of events. Bantam sophomore Taylor Kirchgessner (Bethesda, Md.) fired a shot from distance that hit the top crossbar of the goal and rebounded to senior Nicole Stauffer (Cheshire, Conn.). Stauffer then sent a shot on goal that also hit the crossbar and bounced out, however with Middlebury goalie Ursula Alwang (Weston, Conn.) on the ground after a diving save attempt, Stauffer controlled the rebound once again and finally scored after she kicked the ball over her left shoulder into the back of the net.

Stauffer had another great scoring chance near the 62nd minute mark as she headed a ball that appeared to be bound for the corner of the net, but a great diving save from Alwang preserved the Panthers lead. Senior tri-captain Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) had another good scoring opportunity for the Bantams as she sent a hard header towards net, but just high, as Middlebury held on to win, 2-1.

Trinity returns to action tomorrow as they host the Tufts University Jumbos for a matchup at 1 p.m.
