Box Score Amherst, Mass. – The Trinity College Bantams fell on the road, 4-1, to Amherst College on Friday night in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's hockey action at Orr Rink. Trinity falls to 1-4 on the year and remains winless in league action while Amherst picks up its first win of the season to improve to 1-2.
The Purple & White outshot the Bantams 35-19 as Amherst's defense limited Trinity's scoring opportunities all night. Amherst also won the faceoff battle, 38-27, while starting goalie Sabrina Dobbins (New Castle, N.H.) earned her first win of the season making 18 saves. Trinity first-year goalie Kai-Lilly Karpman (Playa Del Ray, Calif.) finished the evening with 31 stops in her second career start in net.
Trinity's penalty kill unit was tested early after a tripping penalty gave Amherst a skater advantage, but the Bantams held strong to keep the Purple & White off the scoreboard. Karpman recorded 15 first period saves, one of which came when she stoned a Jocelyn Hunyadi (Pepper Pike, Ohio) wrist shot from point-blank range at the ten minute mark. Amherst put rubber to net with just over two minutes left in the first period when off a faceoff win by Eliza Laycock (Hanover, N.H.), Jamie McNamara (Dedham, Mass.) fired a slap shot past Karpman to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Amherst came out firing in the second period which was aided when Trinity was whistled for back-to-back penalties to give the Purple & White a five-on-three advantage. The Bantams killed the first penalty without incident but before they could return to even strength, Amherst sophomore Miriam Eickhoff (Hanover, N.H.) potted her first goal of the season to open up a two-goal lead for Amherst. Alex Toupal (New Brighton, Minn.) tacked on the third Amherst goal just thirty seconds later as she beat Karpman via a helper from Sara Culhane (Princeton, N.J.).
After 19 scoreless minutes in the third period, Laycock dumped a pass in front of the net to Katelyn Pantera (North Branford, Conn.) who flicked the puck into the top corner of the net to extend Amherst's lead to 4-0. Trinity ended the shutout with 25 seconds to play when sophomore Lindsay Miller (Manhassett, N.Y.) fired a shot past Dobbins off a pass from junior Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) that beat Dobbins to the back of the net.
Both teams square off again tomorrow at Orr Rink in the regular season series finale. Puck Drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
