Waterville, Maine - Visiting Trinity College tied the game with 8:22 to play and the scored the game-winning goal with just 1:22 remaining in a 4-2 victory over the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this evening at Alfond Rink. The Bantams, ranked No. 6 in the nation, are 16-4-1 overall and 12-3 in the league, while the Mules drop to 7-10-4 and 4-9-2 in the conference.
Colby led 1-0 after two periods, but took a penalty just 13 seconds into the final period. The Bantams capitalized when Mark Knowlton rammed home a centering pass from Sean Orlando just 32 seconds later. The Mules took their second lead of the game when Kevin Doherty was hit from behind when he was taking a shot but the puck's odd trajectory helped it get past Trinity goalie Alex Morin. Bradley Buvinow scored at 11:38 of the third period to tie the game at 2-2. The Bantams put a lot of pressure on the Mules and Buvinow ended up behind the net. He went to goalie Emerson Verrier's left and stuffed in a wrap-around shot. Griffyn Martin and Joe Horak had assists on the play.
The game seemed headed to overtime when Trinity scored in transition. Ryan Cole had the puck on the right side on a two-on-one with Anthony Sabitsky, who scored his 10th of the season. T.J. Sherman also was credited with an assist. Trinity clinched the game when Colby went to the empty net and turned the puck over in its own end. Ethan Holdaway got the easy goal in front after Brandon Cole made the steal to the right of the cage.
After Trinity had the better of play in the opening period, Colby was solid in the second period, as Devin Albert scored his 11th of the season on the power play on a blast from the left face-off circle area. Geoff Sullivan and Michael Decker had assists. Morin improved to 10-1 on the season with 28 saves for the Bantams. Verrier also played well with 31 saves.
