Box Score Williamstown, Mass. - Senior captain Shannon Farrell (Kennebunk, Maine) received a feed from Hannah Oganeku (Castle Pines, Colo.) and fired it past Eph goalie Christina Cleroux (New Glasgow, Nova Scotia) to give the Trinity College women's hockey team a 2-1 overtime victory over the Willliams College Ephs in Saturday's New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's hockey quarterfinal at Williams. Trinity advances to the conference semifinals at Middlebury as the Bantams aim to defend last year's conference championship.
The Ephs came out of the box strong with an early goal 1:54 into the first period. The puck hit a funny partition on the boards and Williams senior Natalie Bernstein (Kenilworth, Ill.) was there to slide it past Trinity goaltender, Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.). The goal was Bernstein's fifth goal of the season and was assisted by senior Michaela Levine (Lititz, Pa.). The rest of the period played evenly with the score 1-0 in favor of Williams as the teams entered the first intermission.
Williams sophomore Alex Lovaas's (Wayzata, Minn.) late first period checking penalty carried over from the first period and Trinity capitalized on this opportunity early in the second period, scoring within the first minute when senior Emma Tani (Orange, Calif.) netted her ninth goal of the season to tie the game for the Bantams, via an assist from fellow senior, Cheeky Herr (Princeton, N.J.). Tough defense by both teams kept the scored knotted at 1-1 at the end of the second period as Williams led in shots on goal, 21-13, at the end of the period.
In the third period, Cleroux and Belinskas made several strong saves, keeping the game tied, and forcing an extra period of play to decide a winner.
Farrell sent Trinity home happy 8:23 into the extra session, her team leading 13th goal of the season. Belinskas finished with 35 saves on the afternoon as Williams outshot Trintiy 36-24. Trinity moves on to play Middlebury next weekend in the NESCAC Semifinals at 1 p.m.
