Box Score Medford, Mass. - The Tufts Jumbos scored twice in the final 1:26 to come from behind for a 10-9 win over the Trinity College women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Bello Field. The loss is Trinity's first in the New England Small College Athletic Association (NESCAC) this season as the Bantams move to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play. The teams combined for 15 goals in the first half with the Jumbos leading 8-7 at intermission. In a much more defensive-oriented second half, Trinity scored the first two goals including one by Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) on a free-position shot with 8:53 remaining giving Trinity a 9-8 edge.
With the two-minute mark approaching, Tufts senior tri-captain Brigid Bowser (Westborough, Mass.) caused a Trinity turnover and cleared the ball into the Bantam end. A shot by Caroline Ross (Sewickly, Pa.) went off the crossbar before she found freshman Gabby Vinci (Washington Township, N.Y.) cutting in from the left side and connected at 1:26 tying the game 9-9.
Tufts won the ensuing draw, which led to Ross driving to the goal and sniping a high shot into the net for the 10-9 Jumbo lead. Tufts controlled the final draw to seal the 10-9 victory over the No. 7 ranked Bantams.
Ross had a goal and three assists for the Jumbos and Cecily Freliech (Wilton, Conn.) scored a goal with an assist as Tufts built an 8-5 advantage. However, Trinity scored twice in 21 seconds by sophomore Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) and junior Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) to close within 8-7 by intermission.
Both goalies stood out in the second half where Jumbo freshman keeper Audrey Evers (San Francisco, Calif.) made five of her seven saves. She also collected a team-high four groundballs for the game. Trinity's Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) entered at halftime and stopped four shots.
Simpson's three goals led Trinity while she also posted two draw controls and two groundballs. Griffin added a team-high three draw controls to her goal and assist on the day.
The Jumbos earned a slim 20-19 margin in shots and were 13-7 winners in groundballs. Trinity had 12 of the 21 draw controls.
