Box Score Middletown, Conn. - Senior co-captain Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) and junior Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) scored three goals apiece to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 12-4 victory over the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this evening at Smith Field. Trinity, ranked No. 7 in the nation, improves to 10-2 overall and 6-1 in the NESCAC with its sixth win in a row and its ninth straight against the Cardinals. The Cardinals drop to 4-7 overall and 1-6 in the league. The Bantams, now 36-4-1 all-time against Wesleyan, will visit No. 2-ranked Middlebury on Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m.
Trinity converted on six free-position shots in nine first-half attempts and jumped out to a 8-1 lead at the break. Griffin scored twice in the first five minutes, sandwiched the two goals around an assist to Lyne, giving the Bantams a 3-0 lead at the 25:40 mark. After Meredith Smith scored Wesleyan's only goal on a free-position shot in its nine attempts with 18:44 left in the first half, five different Bantams found the back of the net on free-position shots before intermission.
Trinity sophomore attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) opened the second stanza with a goal 1:23 after halftime, but the Cardinals rallied to score three of the game's next four goals to make the score, 10-4, with 11:30 on the clock. A 9:45 scoring drought ensued before Trinity scored a pair of insurance goals in the final two minutes.
McInerney and first-year Mary French (Gloucester, Mass.) joined Griffin and Lyne as Trinity multiple goal scorers with two apiece, while Griffin also had an assist, two ground balls, and a game-high six ground balls. Sophomore Kathryn DeLillio (Wilmington, Del.) paced the Bantam back line with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while classmate Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) and senior Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) combined for eight saves in the Trinity goal. Smith scored twice for the Cardinals and Nina Labovich had six saves in the Wesleyan goal.
